1. Sikhye (Sweet Rice Drink)

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup of cooked sweet rice (or regular rice)
  • 5 cups of water
  • 1/2 cup of malt powder
  • 1/2 cup of sugar
  • Pinch of salt
  • Optional: pine nuts or dried fruit for garnish

Instructions:

  1. In a pot, combine 5 cups of water and the cooked sweet rice. Bring to a boil and then simmer for about 30 minutes.
  2. Remove from heat and let it cool slightly before adding malt powder.
  3. Stir well and let it sit at room temperature for about 12 hours to ferment.
  4. Stir in the sugar and a pinch of salt. Chill in the refrigerator before serving.
  5. Serve cold, garnished with pine nuts or dried fruit if desired.

2. Omija-cha (Five Flavor Tea)

Omija-cha, or five-flavor tea, is made from the dried berries of the Schisandra plant. It has a unique taste profile, combining sweet, sour, salty, bitter, and pungent flavors.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup of dried omija berries
  • 4 cups of water
  • Honey or sugar (to taste)

Instructions:

  1. Rinse the dried omija berries under cold water.
  2. In a pot, combine the berries with 4 cups of water and bring to a boil.
  3. Reduce the heat and let it simmer for about 30 minutes.
  4. Strain the liquid into a teapot or pitcher, discarding the berries.
  5. Add honey or sugar to taste, and serve hot or chilled.

3. Banana Milk

This creamy and delicious drink has become a popular favorite in Korea, especially among children. It’s incredibly easy to make and requires just a few ingredients.

Ingredients:

  • 1 ripe banana
  • 2 cups of milk (or a non-dairy alternative)
  • 2 tablespoons of sweetened condensed milk (optional)
  • Ice cubes (optional)

Instructions:

  1. In a blender, combine the ripe banana, milk, and sweetened condensed milk if desired.
  2. Blend until smooth and creamy.
  3. If you prefer a chilled drink, add ice cubes and blend again.
  4. Pour into a glass and enjoy!

4. Korean Iced Coffee

Korean iced coffee is rich, delicious, and perfect for hot days. It is different from your typical iced coffee due to its strong flavor and sweet creaminess.

Ingredients:

  • 2 tablespoons of ground coffee
  • 1 cup of hot water
  • 2 tablespoons of sweetened condensed milk
  • Ice cubes

Instructions:

  1. Brew the coffee using the ground coffee and hot water. Let it cool.
  2. In a glass, add several ice cubes.
  3. Pour the cooled coffee over the ice.
  4. Add sweetened condensed milk to taste and stir well.
