Korean baked goods are known for their unique flavors and textures, combining traditional ingredients with modern techniques. Below is a collection of step-by-step recipes that will take you through the process of creating delicious Korean treats.

1. Korean Cream Cheese Garlic Bread

This sweet and savory bread is a popular street food in Korea, thanks to its gooey cream cheese filling and garlic butter topping.

Ingredients:

  • 500g all-purpose flour
  • 10g instant yeast
  • 50g sugar
  • 10g salt
  • 300ml warm water
  • 100g cream cheese
  • 50g unsalted butter (softened)
  • 6 cloves garlic (minced)
  • Parsley for garnish

Instructions:

  1. In a large bowl, mix flour, instant yeast, sugar, and salt.
  2. Add warm water and knead until a smooth dough forms. Let it rise for 1 hour.
  3. Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F).
  4. Divide the dough into 12 pieces and shape each piece into a ball.
  5. Flatten each ball, place a tablespoon of cream cheese in the center, and fold the dough around the filling.
  6. Place the filled dough balls into a greased baking pan and let rise for another 30 minutes.
  7. In a separate bowl, mix softened butter and minced garlic. Brush this mixture over the risen dough.
  8. Bake for 20-25 minutes until golden brown. Garnish with parsley before serving.

2. Korean-style Rice Cake (Bokkeumbap Tteok)

This chewy rice cake, commonly enjoyed during celebrations, makes a perfect snack or dessert.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups sweet rice flour (also known as glutinous rice flour)
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup red bean paste (optional)

Instructions:

  1. In a bowl, mix sweet rice flour, water, sugar, and salt until smooth.
  2. Pour the mixture into a steaming dish lined with parchment paper.
  3. Steam the mixture over boiling water for about 20-25 minutes or until it is fully cooked.
  4. If using red bean paste, after steaming, divide the rice cake into halves, spread the paste on one half, and press the other half on top.
  5. Let it cool before slicing into pieces and dusting the surfaces with cornstarch to prevent sticking.

3. Hotteok (Korean Sweet Pancakes)

Hotteok is a popular Korean street food, filled with a sweet mixture of brown sugar, cinnamon, and chopped nuts.

Ingredients:

  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup chopped nuts (walnuts or peanuts)
