Bulgogi (불고기)

Bulgogi, meaning "fire meat," is a delicious marinated beef dish. The marinade typically includes soy sauce, sugar, sesame oil, garlic, and pepper.

  • Ingredients:
    • 1 lb thinly sliced beef (ribeye or sirloin)
    • 1/4 cup soy sauce
    • 2 tablespoons sugar
    • 2 tablespoons sesame oil
    • 2 garlic cloves, minced
    • 1/4 onion, grated
    • Black pepper, to taste
    • 2 green onions, chopped

Instructions:

  1. In a bowl, combine the soy sauce, sugar, sesame oil, minced garlic, grated onion, and black pepper.
  2. Add the beef slices and marinate for at least 30 minutes (or overnight for more flavor).
  3. Heat a grill or a skillet over high heat, add the marinated beef, and cook until browned and caramelized.
  4. Garnish with chopped green onions and serve with rice and side dishes.

Kimchi Jjigae (김치찌개)

Kimchi Jjigae is a traditional Korean stew made with kimchi, pork, and other ingredients. It's a staple dish that perfectly embodies the flavors of Korean home cooking.

  • Ingredients:
    • 1 cup of well-fermented kimchi
    • 1/2 lb pork belly, sliced
    • 1/2 onion, sliced
    • 2 green onions, chopped
    • 1 tablespoon gochugaru (Korean red pepper flakes)
    • 4 cups water or broth
    • Tofu (optional), cut into cubes
    • Salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions:

  1. In a pot, sauté the pork belly until it's browned. Add the sliced onion and cook until softened.
  2. Stir in the kimchi and gochugaru, cooking for a few more minutes.
  3. Add water or broth and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer for 20 minutes.
  4. If using, add tofu and green onions, then season with salt and pepper. Serve hot with rice.

Japchae (잡채)

Japchae is a savory stir-fried noodle dish made from sweet potato starch noodles, vegetables, and sometimes beef or other proteins. Its sweet and savory flavors make it a favorite at celebrations.

  • Ingredients:
    • 8 oz sweet potato noodles (dangmyeon)
    • 1 cup spinach
    • 1 carrot, julienned
    • 1 bell pepper, julienned
    • 1/2 lb beef, thinly sliced (optional)
    • 3 tablespoons soy sauce
    • 2 tablespoons sesame oil
    • 2 garlic cloves, minced
    • Sesame seeds for garnish

Instructions:

  1. Soak sweet potato noodles in hot water for 30 minutes, then drain and set aside.
  2. In a skillet, heat sesame oil and sauté garlic until fragrant. Add beef (if using) and cook until browned.
  3. Add vegetables, cooking until just tender. Then, add the noodles and soy sauce, mixing well to combine.
  4. Cook for an additional 5 minutes, stirring frequently. Garnish with sesame seeds before serving.
